Brake system is a very important part of your car, which comprises several components starting from the brake pedal to all down the tire. Components of brake system includes brake pedal, brake light, brake disc, brake pad, brake shoe, brake disc kit. brake servo unit, brake fluid, brake pipes, brake booster, wheel cylinder, wheel cylinder piston and brake master cylinder. Another special components of brake system is called ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) which came with majority of modern car models. Lets understand How the Brake System Actually Works
How Brake System works?
It’s important to understand how the brake system works. You need not to be an expert to understand this simple procedure. Every car owners or drivers should understand the fundamentals of how the different parts of a car works, before learning “How to drive a Car?” Or “Which car to Buy?”. Now lets understand how the brake system works, and what happens when you press down the brake pedal.
When you press the brake pedal down, it hits a piston under the pedal. The piston then open up the switch to the servo unit, and hydraulic pressure is generated in the master cylinder. The master cylinder is already filled with brake fluid and this pressurized brake fluid then moves through several pipes and hoses (generally called passages) to the hydraulic piston, down to the wheel cylinder. The hydraulic piston is then activated, and forces the brake pad or brake shoe against the rotor wall, which generates friction and helps your car to stop.
Brake Repair and Maintenance during Routine Check-up
Now that we understand how the brake system works, lets see what components of the brake system should be taken care of. We often ask the following questions as a car owner:
1. What actually happens to my brake?
2. How frequently should I change my brake fluid?
3. How frequently should I change my brake pads or brake shoes?
4. Why should I change my brake pads?
5. Why should you repair my brake pads and rotors during routine maintenance?
Well, you will get all the answers, in only one reply. Reply of the first question “What happens to my brake?”. we, already know by this time, when we brake, the brake pad or shoe has some friction with the rotor. Due to this friction, the material heats up and transfers small amount of friction materials to the rotor wall. Now when this happens again and again, the rotor wall has a coating of friction material on it. Now, if you don’t repair it during the time of your routine maintenance, the brake pad or shoe will started worn out faster, you will fell the brake response slower then previous and eventually the brake pad will start damaging your rotor. You will feel bad brake response.
It depends on various factors, how long your brake pads or brake shoes last.
Factor 1: Are you using a genuine copy (OEM), a master copy (Japan) or a duplicate one(China or Taiwan).
Factor 2: Are you mostly driving in the City or in Highway?
Factor 3: Are you mostly driving in a traffic heavy area where you are required to use the brake too frequently?
Factor 4: You driving style.

Suggestions for you to get better braking experience
If you want a better braking experience always keep your braking system up-to-date. Keeping brake system up-to-date doesn’t means you need to spend a lots of money on your brake system, neither you should change your brake system components soo frequently.
Keeping up-to-date means following these steps:
1. Repair your Brake Pads and Shoes during Periodic Maintenance
You should always tell your mechanics to open and check your brake pads and shoes during the periodical maintenance. You don’t have enough time to visit the workshop everyday, or every month. Brake pad should be repaired once every 3000 miles if you are driving in a city. Repairing the brake pads and rotors during the routine maintenance will save your time in the short run and save you money in the long run.
2. Try to apply less brake and speed up smoothly
If you speed up smoothly, there will be less need to apply brake frequently. So it is recommended to follow the “Drive slow, stay safe” driving style to save your brake from being worn out too fast.
3.Check you brake fluid during your routine maintenance
When you go for a routine checkup ask your mechanic to check your brake fluid and change if required. Contaminated brake fluid could cause you end up with damaging the wheel cylinder or brake master cylinder and end up with a collision.
